Chain O' Lakes State Park is pretty nice. They have camping, hiking, boat rental (canoe and row boats) and swimming.

Heading up to Wisconsin is your best bet. I backpacked through Black River falls a few years ago. I know they have campgrounds also. It really depends on what you're looking for. Are you looking for an escape or for a family atmosphere? Actually, I had friends that went camping just east of Champaign. They thought it was pretty fun down in mid-southern IL also.

If backpacking is your thing, I've heard that Lusk Creek Wildnerness and the Garden of the Gods in southern IL is nice. I'm sorry. Wish I could be of more help. If you're looking for a week long trip in the summer, I recomend the Porcupine Mountains in UP Michigan or the Cumberland trails in TN. Good luck

There is a place just south of the Tweeter Center (or whatever they are calling it now) called Windy City Campground. It is one of the closest to the city. There is also a Jellystone Park in Millbrook which is about 15 minutes SW of Aurora/Oswego out by DeKalb you have Shabbona Lakes State Park. Then you always have Starved Rock/Mathisson Rock State Parks which are close to each other. There is another state park out by Seneca (US 6 South of I80) I can't remember the name of it though. I hope this is helpful

There's a place in White Water, Wisconsin, and that's about a 3 hour drive. We did some white water rafting at Shotgun Eddy's. I don't know if they're open this time of year, but it was a good time. It's better when the water level is higher, but for beginners, it may be a good idea to go at the beginning of the season when the water level is lower. The water may be colder, though, and there's just not enough heat right now to balance the cold.
