Blocks are always good.  They give babies a head start in life.  :P

For real, there's a woman in town that  makes cute onesies and baby tee's that have cutsey crap like tattoo designs and Mommy's Little Monster and stuff, but I can't remember her name or her online store.  Parts and Labor might carry them though.  I've seen her stuff around at gallery shows.

I went to a 1st birthday party for twins a couple of weeks ago (in San Diego) and I bought them theses stuffed animals that come with a certificate to have a star named after the child. http://www.shiningstar....
Kinda cool. They're currently trying to find a binary star system for the twins.

As cute as those star things are, there's no official registry of those 'names' and multiple companies charge lots of money to name the exact same stars after your kids or whoever. The star will still have a name that's a code of letters and numbers.

(I hate to be a downer, but search for "name star" in google and you'll get tons of companies (http://www.google.com/...)! There is no official star-naming agency.

Yeah, there are even some free ones out there, and there are some that charge hundreds (a family friend did one of those thinking it'd have to cost lots to be official). They'll send you your certificate and maybe track your star online or something, but that's about it. NASA's not looking at that star through Hubble and calling it "Jaime," they're calling it FS191921-12 or something, or maybe a nickname based on its traits.

I'm not a hipster, but I do like things I can use for my baby more than stars. My husband's cousin gave me a blanket called "secure2me", http://www.secure2me.com/. It has clips at each corner, so you can clip it to your shirt to breastfeed, or clip it to the bottom edge of the carseat to prevent the blanket from covering their face, or clip it around your baby sling to cover them, and it won't fall off on the street or get caught between your legs and trip you. I've really enjoyed mine, and I'm even going to buy one of their solarveil types for summer so I don't burn up trying to feed her and she stays cool and ultra white.

I think another great gift is quick food for the pantry.  When she was first born it was difficult to find time to feed myself, and she was a seriously easy baby.  A basket of those soup at hand stuff, some jerky, some sports bars, some cup-o-oatmeal, nuts, trail mix, etc, would be really nice and handy.  Some preloaded moist face wipes would be nice for mom too, and maybe a mini deodorant and peelu gum for her diaper bag. It was so hard getting her ready that i would go out and realize I looked like a homeless person.  Not that there is anything wrong with looking homeless.

Wildflower at Lamar and 9th has always had really cool baby clothes.  And they come in neat containers.  also Over the Rainbow on Exposition and Windsor has GREAT gifts--wooden toys suitable for the young-ins as well as gifts for kids as they get older.  When I was a young mom a handy, trendy diaper bag was a great thing--sounds corny but Babies R Us has a great selection of new baby items.

And I second the Moxie suggestion above.  They would be more likely than the other two I mentioned if you want something edgy (the vibe at Wee and Austin Baby is cool and modern - esp Wee on the modern - but not as edgy as Moxie).  FYI, Moxie JUST moved or is in the process of moving, so call before you go to check location.

It's nice too because it's a gift that "keeps on giving," every two months when they get a copy. I had a subscription when my son was a toddler and it was seriously life-changing for me, in a really good way!!

New parents, I always get them a nice bottle of liquor or champagne.  I figure that one of them definitely needs a drink after not being able to for a long time and they both need an opportunity to relax, and nothing facilitates relaxation more than alcohol.

Don't really see much logic in spending tons of money for cool things on a being that isn't even potty trained yet. Toys get cooler as fine-motor skills set in. Legos are the best gift ever.

I know, Lisa, it's funny. I found and sent my present ages ago! (Went with a jack-in-the-box that was actually a pony, and it plays "home, home on the range", since my friends said they wanted a Roy Rogers / old west theme instead of Disney)

I feel like everyone gets onesies, and then like 6 months later, or less, they can't use anything from the initial gifts.
