Neighborhood: MidtownHey I can't say there's anything to wrong with the place. They serve alcohol. It's all good in my book. I need a little more leg room, but I'm tall so...I guess that's on my end with the whole genes thing.
The only thing I can think of is the restrooms. They need more stalls.

Cool place. The ceiling reminds me of Caesar's Palace. Show was awesome.
On a side note, some people dress as if it's prom night, some dress as if they were going for a burger at McDonald's. So if you are wondering what to wear, you will not be over dressed or under dressed no matter what you decide to wear.

Well, well, I finally had the opportunity to visit the FOX.
Kathy Griffin was in town and performed at the FOX.
Okie Dokie...let's dive right into it!
Likes:
1.) Layout - chek!
2.) Atmosphere - chek!
3.) Coziness - chek!
Dislikes:
1.) Sound system - wack!
Great FOX! Only One major dislike...good job!
The sound system was the only WACK thang in the FOX...
I had tickets on the bottom level / mid section and the sound nearly reached where I was sitting. Each time Kathy would make a joke and the laugh got crzy loud you could not hear a word she was saying...
I mean it was a comedy show..and therefore laughs are permitted!
That's it..just check your sound systems...HA!

I love this place! I remember when I used to volunteer here when I was in High School, just to be in the scene and spread a little piece of me. The staff, the shows, the set-up are all wonderful.
No, negatives about it.
Oh, wait, maybe one- you do have to pay to park unless you take Marta of course (Marta's Smarter)...

If you don't like going to the Fox for a play, concert, movie, wedding, etc then you are a communist. Everything about this place is beautiful and the folks who work here care about your experience. Can you believe Bellsouth almost bulldozed this joint? The details of the buidlings design are very fascinating if you know anything about the origins of the place (built as a Shriners/Masons Temple). If you have never been go for whatever is happening tonight. Like I said, if you don't like going here, you suck.

Don't get me wrong. I love going to the Fox and I've seen many musicals and concerts there since I moved to Atlanta over 20 years ago. If I had rated it prior to this, I would have given 5 stars. But yesterday I learned a lesson. NEVER sit in the balcony. I don't mean the loge seats--those that are at the lowest part of the balcony. I like those seats more than even orchestra. I'm talking about the "dress" level. They are a complete waste of money.
Usually I purchase the best seats available for myself. But yesterday I led a French Club field trip to see Les Miserables. To make the experience available to more of my middle school students, I opted for mid-price seats. Even with a group discount, they were still pricey tickets for 6th to 8th graders. I will NEVER do that again. No one in my group of 52 (including parent chaperons) could understand a word that was song. The acoustics were horrible up there.
It was such a disappointment that my students could not follow the show--even after we discussed the characters, setting, and some of the plot in class. Parents who had never seen the show were lost too. Being able to hear the lyrics is pretty important. After assuring my young French students that the play would be performed in English, the cast may as well have been singing in Russian.
If I ever take a class there again, I'll opt for better seats over a better price. I would rather have fewer students enjoy the show, than everyone be "miserable."

Man.
I went here with my boyfriend's parents about a day after I had met them for the very first time. We decided to see Avenue Q, which I had heard was funny, and it was. It also had puppet sex in it, which could have been totally awkward, but luckily the boyfriend sat in between myself and his parents so during said sex I was able to hide my face from them. Plus it was dark in the theatre, which made it easier to hide the fact that I was dying laughing. Good play. Good parents.
To actually talk about the place: I had no idea that there was a theater like this in Atlanta. I was shocked that it was (is) actually RUL pretty inside. Lovely theater. Wish they had a wider selection of plays that came through, but that's probably not the fault of the theater. Also, Peachtree St. isn't exactly Broadway so perhaps my expectations are too high. And Wicked in playing there in just a month or so, which I just saw in NYC and HIGHLY recommend.

I'm not new to Atlanta - and certainly I have been to the Fox Theatre before. It is absolutely magnificent. Don't get me wrong, the drinks are overpriced and the service is slow - but isn't that to be expected? So, why five stars? I NEVER knew they had the Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival. How did I miss that ?! So, I go and check out SATC on Thursday night and was quite impressed. Tickets are reasonable priced, fun crowd (of course!) and it was soooo much more fun than going to a regular movie theatre. Not to mention, I will forego the popcorn for a Cosmopolitan anyday. Beat that AMC!

OMG!! I have such a crush on the Fox.
This is definitely my fave theatre. The moorish inspired decor is simply wonderful and the little stars twinkling in the "sky" just make the atmosphere.
Saw so many shows here including Phantom, Stomp and David Cooperfield and Christnas wasn't complete each year without seeing the Nutcracker.
This is what I miss most about Atlanta.

I seem to be in the minority not giving the Fox five stars.
Don't get me wrong--I am a huge fan of the 1920s. Hell, I have a flapper tattooed on my back! But I just can't bring myself to give the Fox five.
The architecture is beautiful, the decorations are gloriously fabulous, Mighty Mo (the organ) is spectacular, and the event spaces are incredible. But the Fox has a flaw that I can't really get over: the acoustics.
I've seen everything from Indiana Jones to the Marriage of Figaro here. I've seen musicals; I've seen Dolly Parton; I've seen Alison Krauss.
I love the nostalgia and the history of the place, but it's big and echoey and sometimes it can be hard to hear. The rock shows, operas and musicals I've attended have come out okay.
The movies are tough, though. We went to see Raiders of the Lost Ark with a friend a couple of summers ago, were seated in the balcony, and we couldn't hear the dialogue. Luckily, we knew what was happening so we could follow along, but it was kind of lacking.
Yesterday, we went to see Ben-Hur on the big screen and everything was great--the organ music, the sing-a-long, the ambiance. But the sound was harsh. I'm not sure if it was too loud or there was too much treble, but everytime a character in the film raised a voice, it kind of hurt my ears.
I can totally forgive this because the Fox is awesome. And also because I got in to see this movie for free, but I think it's important to be aware of, at least.

What a Fabulous theatre. It reminds me of back home in NY. I was there last night for the Color Purple. We had amazing Orchestra seats front and center. The staff was very friendly in helping us find our seats in the dark as we were just a few minutes late. Other than the person sitting next to my friend who was so pissy because she would't move when we were trying to get to our seat, OOPS my friend spilled a bit of wine on her. Of course it was an accident. But a great time was had by all.
We've seen plays (Sweeny Todd, most recently) and movies (during the summer flim event) . The concession has candied nuts. it's great to munch on during the play. During intermission at the play, a guy was selling pizza by the slice. We were starving so we really appreciated that. Great place to see a movie. Maybe a full bar would make the fox even better.
Been here for almost everything.
Movies, ballets, concerts, plays.
The first time I can remember going here was for Tommy, we sat way up top in the back and could still see great.
For The Killers we had 8th row seats in the middle and it was amazing.
There's not a bad seat in the house, and the design is amazing.
A definite must-see site for out-of-townies.
Went to the Fox for the first time in February for the Jill Scott concert. Not only is this place an Atlanta favorite, so many come from near and far to experience this great venue.
Although the venue is large, from where I was sitting, it had a very intimate feel to it. I look forward to attending more events at the Fox.

Go for the plays, go for the opera, go for the rock-n-roll.
Pound-for-pound this little stage has it all. Just buy your tickets to something and bask in the fabulousity.
Also, in 1996 I met Bob Dole after one of his campaign speeches here. He shook my hand and stopped for a picture. I don't think it had any impact on the election.
The Fox Theatre is absolutely one of Atlanta's grandest landmarks and sites. I went to "Avenue Q" the other night with a friend who had never been before and while showing them around I remembered how majestic this building really is. With it's mosque-like exterior and its Arabian Nights themed interior (complete with starry night ceiling and palatial balcony), it's a wonder more tourists don't visit here.
The downside to the Fox is absolutely the acoustics. Being built in the 20's, not much has been done in the ways of sound engineering to improve the audience's enjoyment of a show. That being said, it's still Atlanta's premier theatre and rightfully so considering the majestic decor.

This is by far my favorite place to watch a play or performance. From the recent Avenue Q to a past Kelly Clarkson concert, I love and enjoy the whole experience here. The sound is pretty good and I have sat in every possible seat in this theatre and still had a great view of the stage. Did you know that The Fox Theater was recently rated as one of the top grossing venues for ticket sales!?!?
The theater is gorgeous both inside and out. I always feel like I am in Aladdin's castle and have a dire need to watch the Disney Cartoon there. I love the ceiling on how it changes colors from before the show starts to a starry night sky when the show begins. For some reason or another, I like the hot dogs here too...must be the poppy seed buns they use! :)
I have a bunch of friends that volunteer their time to be ushers for the performances. Nothing is better than getting a free viewing of the show, especially at sold out performances! One day, I hope to attend a special event here and checkout the ballroom. Seems like prom was going on this past week...pretty jealous of those kids, since mine was like at a Holiday Inn or something...gotta love being from Virginia, right!?

Beautiful, cool venue, saw some wonderful operas there.
Atlanta is the Fox. The Fox is Atlanta. If you haven't been to the Fox, you haven't been to Atlanta.
This is a former Shriner Temple, hence the Moorish theme. It's awesome to sit in your seats, look at the ceiling and see the stars and clouds...then realize..the stars are twinkling and the clouds slowly moving across the ceiling.
The box office manager, Sunshine Tucker, is an Atlantan Institution...if you haven't met Sunshine, you can't call yourself an Atlantan!
Some people choose to ride Marta, which has a station right by the Fox. Personally, I'm uncomfortable doing that, so drive. Unfortunately, the parking lots have become absurdly expensive...it leaves a bad taste in your mouth to pay $10-$20 just to park close....or $8 to park and then fear as you walk in the dark to the safer streets.
Surprisingly, the concession stand has MARVELOUS food and drinks. The hot dogs are basically about the best you'll ever get anywhere. The fancy Martini's are fun, they have premium drinks. I would avoid the lobby champagne/wine...it's cheap but expensive.
I'd strongly recommend eating at *Enoteca Carbonari one block NORTH on the same side of the street as the Fox...you frequently can get in without a reservation and is perfect for pre-dinner eating. The restaurants on the corners of the Fox are crowded and slow.
I enjoy watching Broadway musicals here. The decor is so grand and fabulous. I guess that's why they call it the Fabulous Fox Theatre!

We've been frequenting the Fox Theatre a lot recently. For Christmas, my husband got me tickets to Broadway Across America. Great present - the gift that keeps on giving! Gives us 6 reasons throughout the year to get dressed up and make a night of it!
I really don't have anything bad to say about this place. Very consistent. You come in expecting to pay $11.50 for a martini and other high prices for food - so although that is high - that is the norm.
Always clean and always helpful people. Beautiful theatre, great sound, always a good time!

"Guys and Dolls" New Years 2008 @ The Fabulous Fox Theatre!
And oh how Fabulous it is!
The Fox Theatre = A GREAT Place to bring in the New Year.
My friends and I got here around 10pm and got in this realllly long line. Some random security guy tells us that if we've purchased our tickets already to get in the second (much shorter) line. We get up there and it's the wrong line, but a nice Fox manager let us stay, so we got in a LOT quicker. Way to start off the night :)
Coat Check was easy. They even had these cute little Happy New Year's headbands on the table. I was excited to grab one, since CVS ran out of those 2008 glasses I wanted so badly.
Went up two flights of thick, hard steps and into the Main Ballroom. Music was booming and drinks were flowing (the bar lines were a hot, crowded mess though...glad I don't drink!) The room was nice and spacious and it was a lovely setting full of yuppies dressed in dapper suits, debonair tuxedos and cute dresses. The other ballroom, the Grand Saloon, was smaller but equally impressive. The DJ was spinning old school and '90s hits. A welcome change from the DJ in the other room; he played that AWFUL Flo'Rida feat. T-Pain song SIX TIMES!
Anyway, I had a really good time. The Fox is definitely a classy, timeless venue and my first New Years outside of Detroit, Michigan was most certainly a positively memorable one!

I went here to catch a Pink Floyd laser show and my wife went there to see the Indie band Brighteyes. It definitely has a classy feeling and a feeling of a medieval castle (helped by huge staircases and large rooms). Even the bathrooms are classy and unique. Basically anywhere you go in this theater you'll see something cool.
So that is the atmosphere but the experience of an event there is something else. I haven't been on the lower level yet but up top I almost couldn't see what was on stage at times (and it was Pink Floyd lasers). I still recommend it and, depending on who you go see there, it can be a relatively cheap outing. Of course the concessions are high priced but that is how the place stays alive so don't be a cheap ass.

The Fabulous Fox!
If you have never been to the Fox, shame on you! It amazes me that I have known people who have lived here for over 5 years and have no idea what the inside of this Atlanta gem looks like.
I remember my first visit to the Fox when I was in grade school on a field trip to see Peter Pan. Our seats were on the balcony and I must have spent more time gazing at the star dusted ceiling and Arabian drapes then watching the actual performance. So if you do come and can't afford to sit close, don't fret, the Egyptian and Arabic decor of this palace is enough to entertain you.
So if you have never been, or haven't been in awhile, choose a show and buy tickets (discount if your in a group) and be glamorous for the night.

I hate to admit it but I have been to the Fox Theater for other things besides concerts. The Fox theater hosts a wide variety of events and performances for numerous audiences. Some of the examples of the events and performances include: concerts; plays like "Phantom of the Opera" and "Rent"; numerous ballet performances; and random movie screening specials of popular cinema blockbusters from the current year or past years.
I have only seen one concert at the Fox. While I thought that the venue itself was a unique and cool place to see a show, the sound quality was not the best, at least from where I was sitting. I was told by veteran Fox Theater concert attendees that the venue itself was historically known for distorting acoustics during a concert. More specifically, an individuals ability to hear any form of the guitarist's contribution to a concert is drowned out by the rest of the band or the crowd itself because of the way the theater is designed.
I have also been to the Fox to see a couple of plays. The last one that I saw their was Phantom of the Opera, which was great if you are in to that kind of stuff. The play that I saw prior to that one was Fame, which I have to admit, I thoroughly enjoyed. Due to the fact that I have not ever seen a ballet at the Fox, nor do I ever plan to unless a gun is held to my head, I must declare the plays as the best form of entertainment that can be seen at the theater.

THIS PLACE HAS GHOSTS! TALENTED ONES!
You can feel it when you go into a performance, but even more so when you take one of their BACKSTAGE TOURS.
This historic & refurbished CLASSIC THEATER puts off POWERFUL VIBES of PERFORMANCES GONE BY that you can't help feeling that old actors are sitting right beside you putting on their make-up and rehearsing their lines! They have been showing films and performances here since 1929!
The FOX THEATER has a warm & cozy, but elegent feeling that shouldn't be missed. Always a professional performance whether its a play, a musical event or the film festival.
I sat in the balcony for Mamma Mia! and the house shook with the musical numbers of ABBA! *Dancing Queen!* *I Have a Dream* *Take a Chance on Me*!
The theater is decorated in the "opulent splendor of the Egyptian pharaohs." Columns, lavish ornamentation, stars on the ceiling, chandeliers, elegant molded decorative plasterwork, lush carpeting, stenciled and painted patterns are everywhere.
Don't miss this SPECTACULAR VENUE when you are in Atlanta!
See a show! Take a tour! Or do both.

Oh I love the Fox. I can't believe they once thought of tearing this beauty down.
I am reminded of when I was in elementary school and we went there to see The Nutcracker. I was in awe of the beautiful dancers, but also the theatre itself. The building has a sort of Egyptian them to the decor, and everything is dripping with excitement. The real beauty here is the ceiling inside the theatre, a starry sky.
The theatre feels like you are in an Arabian palace, with the night sky twinkling overhead. Sometimes when I go here I have a hard time paying attention to what's happening on stage because I'm staring at the ceiling.
I've seen Phantom of the Opera, David Gray, and movies with the Coca Cola Film Festival here - all amazing. I am willing to pay a bit more here to see concerts because I love the atmosphere so much!

Every time I go to the Fox Theater, I become a better person. I feel a bliss very few places made by man produce in me (unless I'm in Machu Picchu or Angkor Wat, but those places are subjects for other reviews) This theater, build in the 20s has a charm that makes it unique. The beautiful entrance and flashy marquee is the first warm welcome to a fantastic experience. I've been blessed with the opportunity to attend grandiose, wonderful stages, but there is something about that indoor cobalt-blue sky with sleepy, drifting clouds and tiny, sparkling stars that I love dearly...
I've been to the Fox for concerts (Sufjan Stevens, Death Cab for Cutie), the ballet (wonderful Madame Butterfly,) and Musicals (My Fair Lady.) This place is so versatile it blends with any genre of entertainment possible. At least I believe so.
Ever time I have people visiting, I try to bring them to the Fox. 100% of these times, my guests rave about this place. It is always a sure shot that goes beyond success...it's the Fox Theater, maybe the most magical place in the ATL!
You get a nice feeling just walking into the Fox. The old school style theater reminds me of the sets in the Shining a lot of the time: classy and worn, with the feeling of something lurking. I always love it when something I really want to see shows at the Fox (ie: the Pixies a year or two ago). It really sets the mood to be sitting out in what seems like an open air castle, complete with fake starlight overhead.
I went to prom and a wedding reception here and both felt perfectly set in the Fox's grand ballroom. You couldn't ask for a more stylish and moody setting for such events. If you're looking to put on a function as such, there's not many better places in Atlanta. The staff did a fantastic job with both events, so you can feel like you're in good hands.
I like how the bathrooms here have lounges. They have old regal furniture just stacked around, a place where I imagine old men with muttonchops and skinny mustaches standing around smoking cigars. I want to go to the Fox some night and just sit around in the bathroom lounge.

the Fox Theater is awesome! We just saw Nickel Creek there (with Bela Fleck opening) and is was great. I've seen other shows there (Trey Anastasio, Cats, String Cheese Incident) and my only complaint is that when we saw the Nutcracker, there was no live music, it was only pre-recorded music playing, which was a huge disapointment. That's more ATL Ballet's fault though.
Fox Theater = woo hoo!

The best larger-sized concert venue in Atlanta. The sound is great. I have seen so many amazing shows here. Topping the list is the Nov. 13, 1989 (thanks Internet!) REM show in which they played every track from Murmur in order, followed by the entire Green album. What a great setting for such an amazing show.
I was also invited to a wedding reception that was held at the Egyptian Ballroom. WOW! It was a beautiful and grand setting. If I were a wealthy, big wedding, social kinda girl, this would totally be the spot. I can only dream of being as classy as the Fox though!

I have been to The Fox more times than I can even remember, but always had a good time. The theatre is beautiful and spacious, and has the most eclectic things going on there all the time.
For instance, I have seen bands play there (ex- The Pixies, Morrissey, and that damned Oasis show where ole boy Liam decided not to show up), I have seen plays and operas, and I have also seen lots of great movies there (yeah, I got dragged to the showing of "The Wizard of Oz" being looped with Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon") and there aren't a lot of venues like this in my opinion.
The Fox will either convince you to get gussied up, or let you show up in jeans and a t-shirt.

I wish I could visit here more often, but many, many things get in my way. The biggest things that get in my way are my complete and total lack of culture and my job and my lack of money. Every time I've gone, I've enjoyed it. I just wish it were easier to get to. The traffic in the area makes it difficult, also. I saw Les Mis there once and really enjoyed it. I know I've been to the theatre since then, but I can't remember, at all, what I went to see there last time. Obviously it was something unforgettable.

The pipe organ at the Fox is amazing. It's not the biggest I've seen, but they had fixed it by the time I went to the Nutcracker last December and during the intermission the organist played Hava Nagila (it was Channukah at the time) and the famous circus song that I don't know the name of...
